It is hard to call any Thursday game a classic in the ACC tournament, but Wake and Georgia Tech put on an offensive show on Thursday night/Friday morning. Wake Forest’s guards put on a show led by Harvey Hale’s 21 points in the two overtime sessions, including a few shots that defy explanation. The Deacons were also led by Ishmael Smith with 13 points and 15 assists. As TRR advised, the Deacons also got to the foul line 48 times. The lead in the game exchanged hands 16 times with the last overtime ending when Anthony Morrows jumper rolled in and then off the rim.

After putting together a big win over in-state rival Virginia Tech, Virginia struggled all game against Wake Forest. Wake and Kyle Visser were able to exploit Virginia's main weakness -- interior defense -- to earn a 78-72 win at home. Unless Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Boston College all lose tomorrow, Virginia will have to be content with sharing the regular season conference crown.

Maryland and Clemson had two similar opportunities last night. Both are teams that prefer to create up-tempo games, both were on the road against supposedly lesser opponents, and both needed these games to solidify their standing with the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Maryland was able to impose its will against NC State, winning 85-70, while Clemson fell victim to Wake Forest 67-65 in a slow-paced second half. The Turtles (19-7, 5-6) are back in the mix while the Tigers (19-6, 5-6) are restless.

TRR to wife: Georgia Tech lost again. Like I thought would happen, no defense, no heart, and an opponent post player goes for 20.
TRR’s Wife: Why did you even watch the game?
TRR: Hmmm. (As of Wednesday morning, still searching for the answer…..)
Georgia Tech lost another road game last night to the conference’s weakest team. Georgia Tech showed a few positive signs last night (only 9 turnovers, 24 foul shots, 14 assists on 26 field goals), but the team should finally realize that you can’t beat anyone with poor position defense. Kyle Visser was the latest post player to receive the gift of Tech post defense as he went for 26 points and 9 boards. Was I the only one taught to not allow an easy entry pass to the post? For our statistics fans out there, easy post catches leads to close shots around the rim which leads to 54% from the floor. Tech looks lost on the defensive end. Maybe they can sneak into a Coach K practice and actually learn the concept of help and rotate. The good news for Tech is they are almost assured of an extra home game in the post season. Of course, I am not sure how many Jacket fans will turn out for an NIT opener.

Wake Forest (9-10, 1-6) kept this one close for a good stretch, but eventually succumbed to North Carolina's (18-2, 5-1) superior talent and depth. The first half had the feel of a classic battle between two legends of Tobacco Road, and reminded us of why we chose the name we did for our humble report. Though nobody gave Wake much of a chance entering this game against the No. 4 ranked team in the country, pure effort and courage kept the Demon Deacons in it.

Duke held the Demon Deacons to the fewest points allowed by an opponent in Cameron Indoor since 1958. In case you were wondering, 1958 is the year Sputnik fell back to earth, Bobby Fischer won the the U.S. Chess Championship at age 14, tuition at Harvard was $1250 per year, a gallon of gas cost $0.24, and the St. Louis Hawks defeated the Boston Celtics to win the NBA Championship. Yes, the now Atlanta Hawks were actually good at one point in their history, but that's a story for a later date.
It was hard to tell whether Duke's defense was that good, or Wake's offense was that inept. Probably some of both. Either way, No. 17 Duke (15-5) cruised to a 22 point victory and evened their conference record at 2-2. Wake (9-8) is still searching for answers, falling to 1-4 in conference play and quickly becoming a non-factor in any post season discussion.

Virginia Tech (7-3, 1-0) used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to open their ACC schedule with a hard-fought 63-60 win over visiting Wake Forest (5-4, 0-1). Wake Forest had an edge in several categories, namely shooting percentage and rebounding, but ultimately lost the game by turning the ball over too many times and by failing to get to the foul line as often as the Hokies.

Wake Forest (5-3) was wondering which DePaul (5-5) team would take the floor, the one that beat Kansas or the one that lost to Northwestern. Unfortunately for Wake, the team that beat Kansas showed up. DePaul took it to Wake Forest from the start, using a frenetic pace and Demon Deacon turnovers to take an early 12-2 lead that they would never relinquish, cruising to a 78-63 win.
Continue Reading >The Demon Deacons used some opportunistic three point shooting and energized defense in the overtime session to upset Bucknell on the road 85-83. Yes, you read that right, Wake upset Bucknell. We too often assume that a team from the ACC will be favored over mid-major opponents. However, Bucknell is favored to win the Patriot League this year, made the NCAA tournament last year, and upset Kansas in the 2005 NCAA tournament while proceeding to the round of 32. The Bisons are also well coached and always play with intensity.
