Singletary Withdraws, Young Stays In

ESPN.com news service is reporting that Sean Singletary has decided to withdraw his name from the NBA draft and return to Virginia for his senior season. We think this was the right decision given his projected draft position. Though Singletary was an All-ACC performer, his lack of size and inconsitent shooting hurt his draft position. Sean can't fix the size issue, but he can become a better shooter. This is what the NBA draft rules allow for -- players to test the draft waters and learn directly from pro scouts what their strengths and weaknesses are.

ESPN is also reporting that Georgia Tech Freshman Thaddeus Young has decided to remain in the 2007 NBA draft. We think Young could benefit from another year in college, but it's hard to argue against staying in the draft when he's currently projecting in the top 15 and his teammate, Javaris Crittenton, is also leaving Tech. Young has a pro-ready body but will still need some time to develop.

UNC Carries the Hopes of the ACC

After the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, the only team left representing the ACC is North Carolina. Boston College, Maryland, and Virginia all had chances to advance while Virginia Tech seemed overmatched against a tough Southern Illinois defense. Had the ball bounced a little differently in a few cases, two or three ACC teams could be moving on. However, it's now down to the Tar Heels who are playing as well as any of the remaining teams in the tournament.

(5) Tennessee Downs (4) Virginia 77-74

By Michael

The inability of Virginia to get offense outside of Reynolds and Singletary finally caught up with them. Joseph did contribute 10 points off the bench, but Diane, Soroye, and Cain could only manage 11 points and 9 rebounds between them. The three had all their points from the line while finishing a pitiful 0 for 7 from the floor. TRR has always said that the lack of inside game or consistent third scorer would limit how far Virginia would go.

Tennessee put four players in double figures, outrebounded the Cavaliers on the offensive glass, and converted 11 of 26 from three. This was just enough to offset 26 from Reynolds, 19 from Singletary, and 31 of 36 free throws by the Cavaliers.

The two teams are actually very similar in style and composition, but today Tennessee was a better Virginia than Virgina. Tennessee advances to meet OSU, a game that they can win if the outside shot is falling. J.R. Reynolds has played his last game for the Cavaliers and the faithful will now await Singletary's decision on whether to return.

ACC Receives 7 NCAA Tournament Bids

By Michael

We would have posted some comments on the brackets earlier, but the server was down for several hours. Of all days for that to happen...

North Carolina wins a share of the regular season conference title and wins the ACC Tournament outright...and what is their reward? Possible games against Marquette, Texas, and Gerogetown in the toughest regional bracket. Thanks, but don't do us any more favors.

That and other thoughts in this post.

Virginia Settles for Share of Conference Crown

By Michael

After putting together a big win over in-state rival Virginia Tech, Virginia struggled all game against Wake Forest. Wake and Kyle Visser were able to exploit Virginia's main weakness -- interior defense -- to earn a 78-72 win at home. Unless Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Boston College all lose tomorrow, Virginia will have to be content with sharing the regular season conference crown.

Virginia Rises to the Top Slot in the ACC

By Michael

Two minutes into this game, TRR scribbled in his notebook,"The defenses are focused on stopping the guard duos and forcing the supporting cast to step up." On this night, Virginia's supporting cast would indeed step up and provide the necessary offensive balance, allowing No. 25 Virginia (20-8) to extract revenge from No. 21 Virginia Tech (20-9) with a 69-56 win on senior night in a rockin' John Paul Jones Arena.

What Virginia didn't know at the time was that Georgia Tech would soon take down the mighty Tar Heels, allowing Virginia to slide into first place in the ACC with an 11-4 conference record. North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Boston College all sit close behind at 10-5. Virginia all alone at the top? Who wouldda thunk it?

Cavs Rally to Sting the Jackets…75-69

Virginia clinched a first round bye in the ACC Tournament on Saturday by staging a late rally to edge a game Georgia Tech team. Trailing 69-62 with 3:31 left, Virginia would score the last 13 points in another road meltdown by the Jackets. The key play was a put back by Tunji Soroye with 29 seconds left that gave Virginia a two-point lead and the eventual win.

Virginia Uses Timely Three Point Shooting to Down FSU

By Michael

Both Virginia and Florida State rely on the three point shot. Nearly 39 percent of all Cavalier field goal attempts and 33 percent of Florida State attempts are threes, the first and third highest ratios in conference, respectively. Today, Virgina was better from deep, making 12 of 26 three point attempts and receiving a season high 17 points on 5 made threes from Adrian Joseph. That was enough to hold off a late charging Florida State 73-70

Virginia Tech Stomps Virginia

By Michael

Virginia Tech (17-7, 7-3) jumped all over Virginia (16-7, 8-3) from the opening tip, opening a 38-22 halftime lead and cruising to an 84-57 dismantling of a Cavalier squad that had won seven straight conference games. Dowdell and Gordon shut down Singletary and Reynolds, and received excellent production from Washington (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Vassallo (22 points, 4-6 3-FG).

Oops, We Did it Again! Virginia Rallies Late, Downs Duke 68-66

By Michael

Both teams entered this game with 5-2 conference records. Ahead of them in conference was North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Boston College. With Virginia Tech stumbling in a loss to NC State and question marks surrounding BC's play sans Williams, the winner of Virginia v. No. 10 Duke would be in excellent shape to make a run for second place in conference. Virginia was just good enough, overcoming their second late-game deficit in a week, allowing us to quote Brittney Spears. We promise we won't do it again.

Nothin' Up My Sleeve...Presto! Virginia Pulls a Rabbit Out of the Hat

By Michael

Clemson and Virginia both looked like they were on Ambien in the first half. I expected a faster paced game than the grind-it-out affair that took place. With Singletary sitting out much of the first half in foul trouble, I went into halftime thinking that Clemson should have put a bigger margin in place than the 34-30 lead they took into the locker room.

Virginia 103, Maryland 91: Virginia Holds Home Court Again

By Michael

Virginia (10-6, 2-2) nearly blew a 20 point first half lead, but held on to earn another quality win and improve their conference record to 2-2. The Cavaliers were led by Mamadi Diane with a career high 26 points, and a parade of free throw shooting by Reynolds and Singletary, who finished a combined 23 of 26 from the line. Maryland (15-4, 1-3) had a chance to build on a solid win versus Clemson, but now faces an uphill battle in conference play.

Virginia Rips Gonzaga: Got Singletary?

By Michael

Sean Singletary has a “thing” for Gonzaga. After dropping 35 points on Gonzaga last year, the junior guard bettered his effort with 37 points while hitting 7 of 10 three point shots. Though Gonzaga looked a step slow and was never really in it, the Cavaliers earned their second quality non-conference win 108-87, which should help them during the tournament selection process.

TRR’s Projected Order of Finish in the ACC.

1. NORTH CAROLINA. Roy Williams and company simply have too much firepower. The key will be getting the youth up to speed. Ellington, Wright, and Lawson surrounding ACC MVP Hansbrough will be too much for opponents to handle.

Postseason destination: NCAA final four or better.
