The Tobacco Road Report ACC Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award goes to Brandon Costner of NC State. Costner's full repertoire was on display for four consecutive games and his 90 total points are a new ACC Conference Tournament record. Congratulations to Brandon and the Wolfpack for an excellent ACC Tournament run.

The Tar Heels held off a feisty Wolfpack squad to earn their 16th ACC Conference Tournament Title. Congratulations to Roy Williams and his cast of super freshmen.

Two serious bombs by Wes Miller to close the first half. The 10-2 run was a reflection of the Carolina depth as the Wolfpack ran out of gas at the 2 minute mark.
TRR thought Wright's length would bother Costner inside and that appears to be true. State, however, is having good success with the high pick and roll with their bigs. Costner's well-rounded game and ability to put the ball on the floor really shows here. McCauley is cleaning the offensive glass and Carolina would be wise to keep a body on him.
TRR has UNC with 20 points in the paint and NC State with 15 points from behind the arc. We continue to feel this inside-outside aspect of the offenses will determine the outcome of the game. Three pointers need fresh legs...does NC State have one last reserve of energy?

NC State downed Virginia Tech 72-64, setting up an All-Tobacco Road final in the ACC Conference Tournament. The Wolfpack continue on their magical run, but have been fortunate to face three similar teams. That will change today when they meet North Carolina.
Continue Reading >During the season, TRR was noted two things about UVa: (1) The guards are better than anyone else's and (2) their lack of post play will kill them in the post season. On Friday, the Wolfpack trio of Grant, Costner, and McCauley combined to score 54 points against the UVa frontline in a game where NC State shot an effective field goal of 62%.

When preparing our previews for the first round of the ACC Conference Tournament, Chris noticed that the Wolfpack haven't won a conference game when they had less than a 55 percent EFG. Without Henderson to provide some additional muscle inside, NC State pounded it in to Costner and McCauley. The two responded with 45 points on 17 of 25 from the floor and helped NC State record a stunning EFG percentage of 65 percent against Duke. NC State rode these two and a stellar second half from Atsur to down the short-handed Blue Devils 85-80 and advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament. Good call Chris (you know how much it pains me to admit that!).

After beating both Duke and North Carolina in back-to-back outings, the greatest danger facing the Terrapins today was not NC State, but themselves. Maryland avoided the let-down and in the process ran its record this year to a perfect 6-0 against the state of North Carolina.
Continue Reading >We have to admit up front that nobody on the TRR staff saw this one. With so many other big games on the schedule this weekend, we had to choose, letting Miami v. Wake and NC State v. Virginia Tech slip through the cracks.
However, we have seen enough of the Wolfpack to know that they can get on a roll offensively and when the shots are falling, they're tough to beat. The Wolfpack finished with all five starters in double figures and averaged a stunning 1.35 points per possession. 21 assists on 32 made field goals, or assists on 35 percent of 60 total possessions is outstanding. The Wolfpack also held the defensive glass, gathering a conference-high 76 percent of all defensive rebound opportunities.
The outcome of this game didn't materially change things with respect to the NCAA Tournament, but it will make it more difficult for Virginia Tech to win the regular season conference outright. This is why we love ACC play...Virginia Tech beats UNC twice but loses to NC State twice. Welcome to Tobacco Road.

Maryland and Clemson had two similar opportunities last night. Both are teams that prefer to create up-tempo games, both were on the road against supposedly lesser opponents, and both needed these games to solidify their standing with the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Maryland was able to impose its will against NC State, winning 85-70, while Clemson fell victim to Wake Forest 67-65 in a slow-paced second half. The Turtles (19-7, 5-6) are back in the mix while the Tigers (19-6, 5-6) are restless.
Continue Reading >Congratulations to Jared Dudley and Brandon Costner. Dudley has come up big in the absence of Williams and Costner's excellent all around game helped lift NC State over Tobacco Road rival UNC. See more details here.

In a game that was a microcosm of Tech’s entire season, the Yellow Jackets went on an 18-0 run over an 8 minute period to rally for an impressive victory on Tuesday night. The Jackets were led by Javaris Crittenton (21 points, 7 assists, 2 turnovers) and Thaddeus Young (15 points, 7 rebounds), while the Wolfpack put four players in double figures.
NC State (11-6, 1-3) notched their first conference win today 88-74 with a win over Wake Forest (9-7, 1-3). The Wolfpack jumped on the Demon Deacons with an 18 point halftime lead and held on down the stretch.

My buddies at TRR told me to expect an Eagle’s beatdown, but I was skeptical. Can you blame me? They were right though and BC (10-4 overall, 2-0 ACC) righted the ship a bit and got an early road win in the ACC season, always a good thing.

There wasn’t much defense in this one. UNCG (6-7) kept raining threes while N.C. State (10-4) went to the inside game for shots in the paint and free throw opportunities. Whichever team converted the most would win. N.C. State eventually did, but it took overtime, a career-high 26 points from McCauley, and 31-37 from the line to get it done.
With Engin Atsur missing the game due to injury and short on players, NC State ran out of gas down the stretch, falling to West Virginia 71-60.

After losing Engin Atsur with a hamstring pull with 14:23 remaining in the first half, N.C. State went to a 2-3 zone to slow the pace and keep the already thin Wolfpack out of foul trouble. The zone was just what the doctor ordered as Michigan went cold from the three point line and N.C. State outscored the Wolverines 31-14 the rest of the way until halftime. Michigan made a run in the second half, but the Wolfpack had enough down the stretch to hold them off, winning 74-67 and giving the ACC an early 1-0 lead in the 2007 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Continue Reading >1. NORTH CAROLINA. Roy Williams and company simply have too much firepower. The key will be getting the youth up to speed. Ellington, Wright, and Lawson surrounding ACC MVP Hansbrough will be too much for opponents to handle.
Postseason destination: NCAA final four or better.
