Clemson Loses Steam...and an NCAA Bid

By Michael

The game was a microcosm of the Tiger season: start strong and fade down the stretch. Florida State took advantage of a fluke over-and-back violation and a fortunate call in the closing seconds to beat Clemson 67-66 in the first round of the ACC Conference Tournament.

Tobacco Road Report All-ACC Awards V

In this article we present our final TRR All-ACC Awards. Some of these awards are quite unconventional, including the TRR Coach with Brass Award, the TRR Shut-up Dickie V. Award, and the TRR Jason Vorhees Award for the team that comes back from the dead. That and much more is just a click away.

Virginia Tech Falls to Clemson, Fails to Share in Title

We're not sure what to say anymore when it comes to Virginia Tech's penchant to play to the level of their opponent. Tech had something to play for in this game and a share of the conference title would have been a nice cap to a turnaround season. Instead, the Hokies failed to guard the three point line, allowing Rivers and Hammonds to shoot 8 of 14 from three. Clemson then mixed its defenses well and the press was surprisingly effective at rattling the Hokies at several points during the game. The result was that Dowdell couldn't find a second fiddle and the Hokies became much easier to defend. Clemson is hanging onto slim hopes for an NCAA bid. We don't think they're in, but the committee has something to think about now.

BC Rallies in 2nd Half to Down Tigers

by David

You know coming into this game someone had to win. Neither BC nor Clemson has been dominant down the stretch, to put it nicely, and both teams needed a win to right the ship and solidify playoff hopes. Clemson came out hard in the first half but lost their intensity in the second half and BC took control.

Best Student Section "Sign" of the Week

The Best Student Section "Sign" of the Week goes to the student body of the Clemson Tigers. TRR loved the Flavor Flav clocks around the necks of the faithful in reference to the extra time the Blue Devils received in their win over Clemson at Cameron Indoor earlier this year. As Flavor would say, "Yeeeeaaaahhhh Booooiiiii!"

Duke Struggles Late Again, Holds on Against Clemson

By Michael

Duke (21-7, 8-6) has managed to right the ship with three straight wins in conference. The Dukies, however, have fallen into a pattern of surging early and tightening late which has allowed their opponents to get back into the game. Last night it was Clemson cutting the deficit to five before falling 71-66. The Tigers have fallen to 5-8 in conference and need to win out against BC, Miami, and Virginia Tech to have a realistic chance for an NCAA bid.

Maryland Stays Alive, Beats Clemson 82-66

By Michael

As we mentioned in our weekend preview, which can be found here, this was an important game for both teams. Maryland and Clemson both entered this game with identical 5-6 conference records, with the NCAA Tournament selection committee rarely taking more than one ACC team with a sub-500 record in conference. Maryland's offense was better today, and the Terrapins held onto the defensive glass enough to emerge with a solid 82-66 win on the road.

Maryland Back in Hunt, Clemson Raises Doubts

By Michael

Maryland and Clemson had two similar opportunities last night. Both are teams that prefer to create up-tempo games, both were on the road against supposedly lesser opponents, and both needed these games to solidify their standing with the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Maryland was able to impose its will against NC State, winning 85-70, while Clemson fell victim to Wake Forest 67-65 in a slow-paced second half. The Turtles (19-7, 5-6) are back in the mix while the Tigers (19-6, 5-6) are restless.

Big Win in the ATL

Georgia Tech 80, Clemson 62

Georgia Tech can play defense? On Saturday afternoon at the Thrillerdome, the Jackets stopped the bleeding, temporarily at least, by beating Clemson at their own game. The Jackets scored the bulk of their points in the lane with dribble penetration and domination of the offensive glass. The Jackets pulled 21 offensive boards (4 less than Clemson’s total) and exploited the soft Tiger post defense. Tech collected 62% of their missed shots.

Nothin' Up My Sleeve...Presto! Virginia Pulls a Rabbit Out of the Hat

By Michael

Clemson and Virginia both looked like they were on Ambien in the first half. I expected a faster paced game than the grind-it-out affair that took place. With Singletary sitting out much of the first half in foul trouble, I went into halftime thinking that Clemson should have put a bigger margin in place than the 34-30 lead they took into the locker room.

Clemson Gets Robbed

By Michael

TRR has had enough with the advantage Duke receives a home. It's hard enough to execute a game plan five on six in Cameron Indoor with the Crazies performing with their usual high energy. We have no problem there...home court advantage is home court advantage. Visitors have to rise above that challenge on their own. Kudos to the Crazies. But to try and win five against nine is nearly impossible.

I've dumped the remainder of my write-up in favor of this simple premise: Clemson earned the right to have the game decided in overtime. After fighting to get within three points after a Hamilton layup with five seconds left, Clemson received a gift. Josh McRoberts looked to inbound the ball to Greg Paulus, but Paulus zigged while McRoberts zagged and the entry pass sailed out to the three point line into the hands of Hamilton who drained a three. With 1.8 seconds showing on the clock, the game looked destined for overtime.

Unfortunately, the refs decided to play clock management after feeling excessive time ran off the clock after Hamilton's made basket. Probably true, and your's truely noted it to the Official Wife of TRR when it happened. However, I also noticed that the clock started well after Hamilton received the errant inbounds pass. So if the referees were going to put time back on the clock for running too long after the made basket, they should have offset this by the amount of time not run off the clock on the inbounds pass.

On net, the clock should have read about 3.5-3.8 seconds left, meaning McClure's layup would not have been taken in time. By putting the clock back to 4.4 seconds, the refs were saying Hamilton caught, set, launched, and sank a three pointer in 0.6 seconds. Absolute hogwash (this is still a family site)...and we expected nothing less from referees in Cameron Indoor.

Clemson Stomps BC: BCing You in the Post-Season?

By David

In the midst of preparing for hari kari this week, I paused and decided to believe in Al Skinner's ability to maintain BC's winning ways. If this game was to be an answer questions about how the Eagles will play without Sean Williams, and whether they will be dancing in March, the answer is not to the liking of the Chestnut Hill faithful. Clemson really controlled the inside and shot the lights out from outside for the 74-54 victory.

Carolina Overcomes Miscues, Downs Clemson 77-55

By Michael

Clemson (17-2, 3-2) showed good energy on the defensive end from the start and used several Carolina turnovers to their advantage, but once Carolina settled down it was only a matter of time. The Tar Heels (16-2, 3-1) were much better in executing their half-court offense and blew the game wide open in the closing minutes before halftime. Brandon Wright (17 points) carried the Tar Heels early and Tyler Hansbrough (16 points, 7 rebounds) carried them late. Together they were enough to overcome 20 steals and 12 blocks by the Tigers.

Maryland 92, Clemson 87: The Tigers Should Fear the Turtle

By Michael

Two unbeaten streaks ended today. Clemson, the last remaining unbeaten in Division I, fell to 17-1 overall with a 92-87 loss to Maryland in College Park. The loss drops Clemson to 3-1 in conference and ups Maryland (15-3) to 1-2 in ACC play. That was the first streak...the second deals with James Mays, who was 28-0 as a starter prior to today. Mays gave a valiant effort, scoring 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. However, Maryland's bigs -- Gist, Ibekwe, Bowers, and Osby -- made Mays and Booker (14 points) work hard for their points and a steady stream of Terrapins to the free throw line kept Maryland in control.

Respect the Tigers: Clemson 75, Georgia Tech 74. Tech Can’t Close

By Chris

The Georgia Tech-Clemson matchup on Saturday showed that the Tigers are not likely to fade in conference play. Clemson used their basic formula for success on Saturday: aggression. The Tigers were able to force 17 Tech turnovers, pull 15 offensive rebounds, and get to the foul line 26 times. Their statistic advantage in these areas was the difference in the game.

Clemson 75, Georgia 60

By Chris

How do we best describe this game? Clemson outhustled Georgia, Clemson physically dominated Georgia, Clemson played aggressive wing defense that frustrated Georgia’s guard play, Clemson’s athletic post players controlled Georgia’s less mobile bigs…we could go on.

In a 75-60 victory, Clemson showed it has at least a pretty good basketball team. We are not ready to describe them as a conference leader or even an NCAA worthy team, but the Tigers are clearly improved over last year. Let’s look at the game.

Clemson 90, Wofford 66

Clemson (10-0) remained unbeaten by using a late run to beat a stingy Wofford (4-6) squad 90-66. Clemson shot 55 percent for the game, had four players in double figures, recorded 22 assists, and only committed 9 turnovers. Wofford, however, stayed within striking distance throughout much of the game by making 11 of 26 three point attempts.

TRR’s Projected Order of Finish in the ACC.

1. NORTH CAROLINA. Roy Williams and company simply have too much firepower. The key will be getting the youth up to speed. Ellington, Wright, and Lawson surrounding ACC MVP Hansbrough will be too much for opponents to handle.

Postseason destination: NCAA final four or better.
