UNC Carries the Hopes of the ACC

After the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, the only team left representing the ACC is North Carolina. Boston College, Maryland, and Virginia all had chances to advance while Virginia Tech seemed overmatched against a tough Southern Illinois defense. Had the ball bounced a little differently in a few cases, two or three ACC teams could be moving on. However, it's now down to the Tar Heels who are playing as well as any of the remaining teams in the tournament.

It's Raining Threes, Alleluia

By Michael

In our preview of this game we said that the priority for the Terrapins was to slow down Butler's production from the three point arc. Evidentally, this is easier said than done. Butler made 12 of 26 from deep on their way to a 62-59 victory that sends them to their second sweet-16 since 2003.

NCAA Round 2 Preview: (4) Maryland v. (5) Butler

By Michael

Please...quit calling them a mid-major. Butler has been ranked nationally all season and has more tournament experience than most of the remaining teams in the field. Their home court, the venerable Hinkle Fieldhouse of Indiana basketball lore, seats around 15,000 and is regularly at capacity so they're not going to be awed by the big stage. Maryland will have it's hands full against a team that has a strong backcourt, excellent defense, and rarely commits turnovers.

Maryland Outlasts Davidson….82-70

With six players scoring in double figures, Maryland was able to rally from an 8 point deficit in the second half to defeat a tough Davidson squad on Thursday. The Terrapins were led by the solid floor game of DJ Strawberry (12 points, 8 boards, 5 assists) and great interior play by Ibekwe and Osby. The Terrapins were able to control the boards and eventually wear down Davidson star-freshman, Stephan Curry

ACC Receives 7 NCAA Tournament Bids

By Michael

We would have posted some comments on the brackets earlier, but the server was down for several hours. Of all days for that to happen...

North Carolina wins a share of the regular season conference title and wins the ACC Tournament outright...and what is their reward? Possible games against Marquette, Texas, and Gerogetown in the toughest regional bracket. Thanks, but don't do us any more favors.

That and other thoughts in this post.

By Michael

After beating both Duke and North Carolina in back-to-back outings, the greatest danger facing the Terrapins today was not NC State, but themselves. Maryland avoided the let-down and in the process ran its record this year to a perfect 6-0 against the state of North Carolina.

Gary Williams as ACC Coach of the Year?

After being given up for dead several weeks ago, Maryland is now knocking on the door for the top slot in conference, all while giving major minutes to several freshman. There are plenty of deserving candidates for ACC Coach of the Year, but don't be surprised when the name of Gary Williams enters the conversation. TRR will be faced with a tough choice on this one, and we'll release all our conference award winners prior to selection Sunday.

Time for Maryland to Get Some Respect

With a six game conference winning streak and victories over UNC and Duke in the same week, it's time for Maryland to get the respect it deserves with a top-25 ranking. If I'm Gary Williams I don't necessarily want this since the team plays better with a chip on its shoulder, but it's hard to see why Duke gets a No. 14 ranking while Maryland remains unranked. Heritage is one thing, but game results are another.

Maryland Makes it Six

By Michael

If you were like the staff at TRR, you were looking forward to Maryland-Duke all week. Unfortunately, fans of the ACC missed the first 7 minutes of regulation since the Villanova-UConn game ran late. Memo to the NCAA: when one team (UConn) shoots 24-44 from the free throw line and is still losing at home, they don't deserve more TV time! This stinker-of-a-game featured 75 total foul shots...that sound you hear is me snoring.

As for the real game, the meeting between Maryland and Duke felt like deja vu (all over again). Duke has struggled all year against athletic teams, especially those with speed and quickness in the backcourt. Maryland was more athletic from top to bottom and frustrated the Duke offense for most of the night. The solid defense was a catalyst for enough early offense to propel Maryland to its sixth straight conference win by the score of 85-77, solidifying Maryland's new-found role as the most dangerous team in conference nobody wants to face.
