Preseason Preview: Georgia Tech

Pre-Season Preview: Georgia Tech
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
2006-2007 Results: 20-12 Overall, 8-8 Conference
Head Coach: Paul Hewitt
Record at Tech: 127-95 (.572), 7 seasons
Overall Record: 193-122 (.613), 10 seasons

Where is Jimmy Chitwood when you need him?

Last Year in Review:
The 2006-2007 season can be best described as mediocre at best for the Yellow Jackets. With a highly touted freshman class, the Jackets never had the chemistry to consistently play with the conference heavyweights and stumbled to a 20 win season and a first round exit in the NCAA Tourney.

Singletary Withdraws, Young Stays In

ESPN.com news service is reporting that Sean Singletary has decided to withdraw his name from the NBA draft and return to Virginia for his senior season. We think this was the right decision given his projected draft position. Though Singletary was an All-ACC performer, his lack of size and inconsitent shooting hurt his draft position. Sean can't fix the size issue, but he can become a better shooter. This is what the NBA draft rules allow for -- players to test the draft waters and learn directly from pro scouts what their strengths and weaknesses are.

ESPN is also reporting that Georgia Tech Freshman Thaddeus Young has decided to remain in the 2007 NBA draft. We think Young could benefit from another year in college, but it's hard to argue against staying in the draft when he's currently projecting in the top 15 and his teammate, Javaris Crittenton, is also leaving Tech. Young has a pro-ready body but will still need some time to develop.

ACC Receives 7 NCAA Tournament Bids

By Michael

We would have posted some comments on the brackets earlier, but the server was down for several hours. Of all days for that to happen...

North Carolina wins a share of the regular season conference title and wins the ACC Tournament outright...and what is their reward? Possible games against Marquette, Texas, and Gerogetown in the toughest regional bracket. Thanks, but don't do us any more favors.

That and other thoughts in this post.

Shake and Wake….Deacons Win a Classic, 114-112.

It is hard to call any Thursday game a classic in the ACC tournament, but Wake and Georgia Tech put on an offensive show on Thursday night/Friday morning. Wake Forest’s guards put on a show led by Harvey Hale’s 21 points in the two overtime sessions, including a few shots that defy explanation. The Deacons were also led by Ishmael Smith with 13 points and 15 assists. As TRR advised, the Deacons also got to the foul line 48 times. The lead in the game exchanged hands 16 times with the last overtime ending when Anthony Morrows jumper rolled in and then off the rim.

Georgia Tech Gets Signature Victory...84-77

Georgia Tech established an identity on Thursday night and got an upset win over UNC at the Thrillerdome, 84-77. Unlike Saturday at Virginia, Tech was able to withstand a strong UNC rally in the last few minutes to hold on and perhaps move off the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Cavs Rally to Sting the Jackets…75-69

Virginia clinched a first round bye in the ACC Tournament on Saturday by staging a late rally to edge a game Georgia Tech team. Trailing 69-62 with 3:31 left, Virginia would score the last 13 points in another road meltdown by the Jackets. The key play was a put back by Tunji Soroye with 29 seconds left that gave Virginia a two-point lead and the eventual win.

Duke Thrives on Tech Mistakes….71-62.

22 turnovers, 36 points off turnovers…game over, Blue Devils win.

Georgia Tech showed their youth on Sunday as the Blue Devils went on a 14-5 run over the last 5 minutes of the first half to get a working margin and a hard fought victory. Duke was led by their guard trio (Paulus-15 points, Nelson- 13 points, Scheyer-14 points) and won the game with the help of Georgia Tech’s fundamental errors.

Tech Finally Ends Road Losing Streak….

Georgia Tech got a much needed road victory Tuesday night at Tallahassee against FSU, 63-57. Tech was able to get FSU’s post players in foul trouble (Al Thornton fouled out in the last few minutes) and forced FSU into a complete perimeter game. Both team’s offenses sputtered, but Javaris Crittenton was able to carry the Jackets with 29 points and add more confusion to the ACC post-season picture.
