Staff put their collective heads together to discuss what we learned from the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Some of our thoughts may surprise you.
Continue Reading >After wins by North Carolina, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech on Wednesday night, the ACC captured their 8th straight ACC/Big Ten Challenge, winning 8 of 11 games versus their Big Ten counterparts. The ACC has now run its record to 48-27 during the eight years the Challenge has taken place.

If there was any doubt about whether OSU (6-1) was deserving of its No. 1 status, Wednesday’s game versus No. 6 UNC (5-1) should silence most of the doubters. The Buckeyes put on the most impressive first half performance seen in years before running out of steam against a deeper North Carolina team on the road 98-89.

Jared Dudley logged 39 minutes and registered a double-double (30 points, 10 rebounds) as Boston College edged out Michigan State 65-58 in a game which could be best described as workmanlike (really a polite way of saying ugly at times). BC shot under 40 percent from the field (ugly), committed 13 turnovers (ugly), and shot 4 for 16 from behind the three point line (yikes). Given that line I am surprised they won this game, but then you realize that State was not much better on any category and on a few were worse: 16 turnovers, 2 of 15 from three point land. Ugly, ugly, ugly, and…well, ugly.

Georgia Tech survived a strong showing by the Nittany Lions in the Thrillerdome last night, 77-73. The game exposed a series of flaws in the Yellow Jackets that Coach Hewitt will need to repair before ACC play begins on Sunday.

The ACC took a commanding lead on night two of the 2006 ACC/Big Ten Challenge and lead 4-2 (see our writeups on Maryland’s win over Illinois here, and Duke’s win over Indiana here). The third and final night of this year’s challenge features a few interesting matchups: Michigan State vs. Boston College, and Ohio State vs. North Carolina. The marquee matchup of OSU vs. UNC could be a preview of a March Madness regional final or perhaps bigger game.

Despite not playing well, Duke found a way to win against a scrappy IU squad. This game was a real stinker, and part of me wants to skip the write-up in protest, but I’m going to try and forget that I’ll never get these two hours of my life back and push on.

The Terrapins showed us they are for real, overcoming a tough road environment to improve their record to 8-0.

The Tuesday Night Games. The second night of the challenge features two outstanding games, Maryland vs. Illinois and Indiana vs. Duke. The night also features a few games that are not so appealing, but will determine the conference champion of this year’s event.

After losing Engin Atsur with a hamstring pull with 14:23 remaining in the first half, N.C. State went to a 2-3 zone to slow the pace and keep the already thin Wolfpack out of foul trouble. The zone was just what the doctor ordered as Michigan went cold from the three point line and N.C. State outscored the Wolverines 31-14 the rest of the way until halftime. Michigan made a run in the second half, but the Wolfpack had enough down the stretch to hold them off, winning 74-67 and giving the ACC an early 1-0 lead in the 2007 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Continue Reading >The staff at TRR has compiled and aggregated its picks for the 2006 ACC/Big Ten Challenge which begins tonight with Michigan facing N.C. State. We think this may finally be the year that the Big Ten breaks their winless streak, or maybe not. We make our picks below. Half of the staff has 6-5 in favor of the ACC and the other half has 6-5 in favor of the Big Ten. We had to hold our nose on some of the selections so we won’t be taking these to the bank just yet. Mea culpas may be in store.
Continue Reading >The ACC won last year’s edition of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge 6-5. Tonight the Challenge begins with Michigan at N.C. State at 7:00pm on ESPN2. Sidney Lowe has the Wolfpack off to a 4-0 start, but tonight’s game versus Michigan will be a true test of the team’s abilities.
Continue Reading >The ACC remains unbeaten versus the Big Ten in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge after winning last year’s challenge 6-5. The highlights of this year’s Challenge include Indiana at Duke, where Indiana will look to exact revenge after losing to the Blue Devils last year 75-67, and Ohio State at North Carolina, which may serve as a preview of a Final Four match up in Atlanta.
